The story

Summer, 38, lived in Seattle with her husband and two young sons while her parents lived in Nanjing. Her father had suffered a stroke and later needed surgery for worsening fluid buildup in the brain.

One week before the operation, her mother became ill too. A doctor advised hospitalization, but she refused: her husband was about to undergo surgery and her daughter was abroad. She felt she could not become the second patient.

Summer eventually made the least impossible choice. Her husband stayed in the United States with their older son; she took the younger son back to China and spent three weeks with her parents.

The hidden risk was the caregiver

Many families quietly assume one parent is the backup for the other. Father gets sick, mother takes over. Mother gets sick, father takes over. That works—until it doesn’t.

When the caregiver becomes ill too, the overseas child is not simply deciding whether to visit. They may be forced to reorganize an entire household across countries.

Where GAC fits / GAC

  • One Family Account / 一个家庭账户: keep both parents’ state, history, contacts and current tasks together rather than treating each parent as a separate emergency.
  • Backup care / 备份照护: identify who can execute locally when the spouse or normal caregiver becomes unavailable.
  • Continuity / 连续性: carry the same family context across admission, discharge, rehab, follow-up and later events.

Boundary / 边界: GAC coordinates non-clinical family execution and continuity. It does not replace clinicians or provide medical diagnosis.
